Aaron, it’s still early in the morning for me and the caffeine hasn’t hit yet, so I don’t have the proper words to express how vital your reporting and insights are to keeping us informed. You and other independent journalists are working your asses off to provide us with a lifeline of information. Thank you so very much for all of the ceaseless hard work you are doing.

If it shuts down, the executive branch then gets to choose where the money gets spent.....which is the lesser of the 2 evils? I agree with Shut it Down! But I fear how the bozo would allocate the money; it likely will end up in his crypto currency & Putin's bank account

We can't let the courts shut down.

Also the scary prospect that Trusk would get to choose when, and what part of the government would re-open. So he could leave parts he doesn't like closed indefinitely.

This is not a battle we can win.

Respectfully, I don’t think he caved as much as made a difficult decision. We the people have been outsmarted by the architects of Project 2025. IMO there is no way that Felon47 or the Muskrats were smart enough to have devised this perfectly horrible trap. The choice is between a terrible 6 month CR that gives Felon47 and the Muskrats greater power and essentially consents to the various violations of the 1974 Impoundment Control Act and a government shutdown. A government shutdown leaves the executive branch in power and after two weeks, many of the federal courts close. During a government shutdown, Felon47 and the Muskrats can fire (or re-fire) government employees, shutter agencies, decimate our intelligence and enforcement groups and the presently only effective curb on their power, the courts, will have been dramatically curtailed. Further, coming out of a shutdown will require participation from the executive branch. To the extent that they have greater powers during a shutdown, why would this administration ever cooperate with reversing a shutdown? That is the dilemma facing Schumer. I hate this, but I think he’s making the right choice.

Alexandra Maynard's avatar

This is my thoughts too. Of course I don’t want any democrats to vote for something so bad, but I also fear the damage that can be done during a shutdown. It’s a no-win situation. 😩

The New York Times did a good job reporting on this yesterday. Please look it up. Schumer is making a very very difficult decision and the Times broke down what he said. He gave solid reasons. Unfortunately the article is behind a paywall!pay wall!! So Schumer is going to get a lot of hate over this decision but I think he is right. My senators are Merkley and Wyden here in Oregon. I am wondering if they will leave Schumer out to dry or if they will make a more clear explanation and show solidarity with this difficult, difficult decision.

Symonne I have been saying this since November. This should have been done months ago. Biden/Harris were so determined to show the world what a peaceful transfer of power looks like that they wouldn't open any investigations. As time keeps passing, is it possible to do anything? Can we really find evidence supporting a different result? Assuming yes, how do we remove these derelicts from our highest offices? I imagine there will be an outcry that makes J6 look like a tea party. I don't think any of that is a reason not to audit. I just wish it had been done in a timely manner.

What about Nancy Pelosi’s suggestion to fight and use funds to pay the government employees?

Expand full comment
Resistance is NOT Futile's avatar

I don’t think she is looking at the big picture. Also, what funds does she plan on using. Diverting funding from the House vacancy seats, that against all odds could flip because some of the voters are beginning to understand what they have done or from where? I like Pelosi and thought she did a much better job than Jeffries as speaker. She was tough and unrelenting. It’s the reason they hated her. I would like to see Jeffries exhibit even a small bit of her tenacity. The sad news is that there are no good options only bad and worse.

Can they fight to change the things they don’t like or is it a done deal? Does the shut down need to last a long time? I don’t know enough to determine what is the best way to resolve this but this reply seems very comprehensive. It does seem we are F…..d either way.

The GOP has voted down every amendment proposed by the Dems on other bills. I don’t know if the Dems tried to amend the CR. If any amendments were accepted, I believe the House would then need to vote on the amendments. Naturally the House recessed after passing this horrible CR to prevent any changes. I agree that we seem F’d either way, but the shutdown seems to be worse.

In a government shutdown Trump will have even more power to fire. The judicial system will be shut down. He can cause so much more damage. The media is doing a poor job of getting this info out. The New York Times wrote a good article about it but it might be behind a pay wall. Someone else mentioned another article explaining. You might need to scroll through the comments here to find the reference, or do a Google New search. But Schumer is looking at slowing the damage, and its a terrible day when Schumer has to choose voting for a harmful budget PLUS get hate from his constituency. A government shutdown would be far worse for all our government.

Right now with the Republican majority in house senate and White House historically it’s been tough times. Yet this is the perfect storm for Republicans put not forever. Please believe when I tell you there is a roadmap out of this but it’s not a overnight fix it takes months because one of the major ingredients is “ Unity” of We The People and just today faster than snapping your fingers Democrats making a hit list over Democrat Senators who voted to keep the Government open is a why it’s going to take even longer
