Chuck Schumer announced he would support the Republican bill to keep the government open, two additional plane incidents, the USPS will face a massive reduction in workforce, and more

Good morning! Today is March 14th and here is your morning news rundown. We are going to do a paid subscriber Q&A tomorrow night around 7:30 PM EST, so stay tuned for that! If you want to support my work, click the button below and become a paid subscriber today:

With that, here is your rundown:

  • Today is a major day on Capitol Hill as a vote to keep the federal government open looms large. The vote will take place in the early afternoon and Senate Republicans need eight Democrats to join them to pass this bill. Right now, Senate Republicans have firm commitments from John Fetterman and Chuck Schumer, so as it stands, six more Democrats need to agree to support the bill to keep the federal government open. Remember, unlike the House where only a simple majority of the vote was needed, the Senate needs to surpass a 60 vote threshold to pass the bill.

  • There were two aviation incidences in the past 24 hours. Overnight, an American Airlines flight caught fire on the tarmac of the Denver International Airport. Six people were injured and taken to the hospital, but all appear to be okay. This morning, a private plane crashed near the Pitt-Greenville airport in North Carolina, although the true extent of the crash remains unknown.

  • Postmaster General Louis DeJoy informed Congress today that he has entered into an agreement with DOGE to reduce costs and workforce size. As part of this plan, the USPS intends to cut 10,000 jobs within the next 30 days through a "voluntary early retirement" program.

  • A federal judge has ruled that thousands of federal employees who were fired under Trump must be temporarily reinstated. U.S. District Judge James Bredar in Maryland issued a temporary restraining order against multiple federal agencies, departments, and their leaders who had carried out the terminations.

  • Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that his envoy, Steve Witkoff, had a "very good and productive discussion" in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump also expressed optimism, stating there is a strong chance the war could finally come to an end.

  • Today, Donald Trump is set to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 today to expedite the deportation of certain immigrants without traditional immigration court hearings.

  • President Trump has directed the Pentagon to develop military options to ensure continued U.S. access to the Panama Canal. This directive aligns with his recent statements about "reclaiming" the canal, expressing concerns over China's growing influence in the region.

  • The S&P 500 has entered a correction, declining over 10% from its recent peak in just 16 trading days. This rapid downturn marks the seventh-fastest correction since 1929.

See you this evening.
