This afternoon, Representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan’s 13th Congressional District introduced a series of articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. Thanedar's action follows comments last week by Rep. Al Green of Texas, who also pledged to pursue impeachment measures, and statements of support for Trump’s impeachment from Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia.
Right now, independent media is facing attacks like we’ve never seen before. I want you to always have the news first. Please consider subscribing today to allow me to continue doing this work:
The articles, seven in total, outline a broad range of alleged misconduct:
Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Trump is accused of denying due process, violating immigration laws, and openly defying court orders while in office.
Usurpation of Congress’s Appropriations Power: The second article charges Trump with unlawfully impounding federal funds, undermining Congress’s constitutional control over the purse.
Abuse of Trade Authority and International Aggression: Trump allegedly imposed tariffs without statutory authority and made threats of military action against sovereign nations, exceeding his trade and foreign policy powers.
First Amendment Violations: Thanedar cites Trump's retaliatory actions against critics, the press, and attorneys as attacks on free speech and a free press.
Creation of an Unlawful Office: The articles accuse Trump of unlawfully establishing DOGE.
Bribery and Corruption: Trump is alleged to have dismissed criminal cases for political reasons, solicited foreign emoluments, and extracted settlements through coercive means for personal or political gain.
Tyrannical Overreach: The final article claims Trump sought to consolidate unchecked executive power, eroding civil liberties and disregarding constitutional limits on presidential authority.
Despite the sweeping nature of the allegations, the impeachment effort is expected to stall. Republicans currently hold the majority in the House of Representatives and have shown no inclination to support such proceedings. Impeachment would require significant bipartisan backing to move forward, which, under current political conditions, appears highly unlikely.
Nevertheless, Thanedar’s move adds to the chorus of Democratic lawmakers openly advocating for Trump's accountability. With Senator Ossoff’s recent endorsement of impeachment proceedings, a growing segment of the Democratic Party seems intent on keeping the issue alive, regardless of immediate prospects for success.
The articles represent a symbolic stand as much as a legislative strategy — highlighting continued concerns among Democrats about Trump’s actions during and after his presidency, and setting the stage for ongoing political battles as the 2024 election cycle heats up.
