When Trump started this current nightmare this past January 20th - I started to notice every time I texted my brother with any major news - things like immigration, ICE, SCOTUS decisions, protest info, substacks I read, now ICE the Marines and NG living here in Los Angeles where I live, the horrific concentration camp - he’d initially be supportive of what I am doing - going to protests, sharing info, donating to good causes, calling my reps all the time, writing letters, using Resist.bot, signing petitions, giving what money I can to Latino businesses, etc. Then I’d express my outrage, fear, and horror at what’s happening and he started telling me to stop watching the news and that “the people will rise up” but of course, he won’t. He has done NOTHING in the last six months. He’s not MAGA but nothing is affecting him - he’s always had a near-perfect life - so HE LITERALLY DOES NOT CARE. The last thing I sent him was the news of the SCOTUS ruling that stopped judges from issuing national-wide injunctions. He texted me a vicious comment; told me to quit bothering him with this and that he has his own problems. Newsflash: I promise you, he has no problems. I thought bc he hated Trump and was liberal that he’d get out and fight for this country. The truth is he doesn’t give a damn that ICE is kidnapping people, tearing families apart, running around L.A. looking like theyre going to invade Falluja…he doesn’t care about the people in the concentration camp, or the people who will lose Medicaid, or SNAP benefits. I suspect that the quality of empathy is really what is the difference between those of us who are active, (who post, who research, who march, who read, who make calls etc. ) and those who are just going about living their lives as if nothing had changed. I get myself twisted into fuming crying outraged knots when I hear about Alligator Auschwitz or the negative rulings of the Supreme Court or what the people in Ukraine must be experiencing, and that sparks a ton of activism. But now and again I am stopped short by the fact that, as yet, none of this evil is touching my life directly, and if I just stopped watching and listening to what is going on in DC, I could go about my life enjoying myself, going to the movies, walking in the nice weather, chuckling at the antics of my cat. No stress. It floors me to think that thought. That a large segment of the population may, like Trump and similar people, may just not have any imagination, any empathy, any way to put themselves in another's shoes and feel their pain. Sometimes it feels like there are people in other countries who care more about our troubled times than so many who live here. And then there are the days for me and for again, a large segment of the population, where perhaps it's all they can do to keep up with getting the kids up and dressed for school, doing the laundry, working against strict important deadlines on projects at work or doing two jobs to make ends meet, caring for a sick husband or a mom with dementia. For those people, taking time to immerse oneself in the current political drama--well who has any time or energy left at the end of the day. And what about those being bowled over by falling in love, or madly writing their novel, or training for the Olympics...or cleaning up after a tragic flood... I honor anyone who is taking the time to pay attention, to contribute time and energy, to worry and care, to support people like Aaron and those hardworking elected officials that we hear of who are standing up and using their voices and whatever power they have to do good. What a complex world we are living in....
Janice, you make so many excellent points. Your comments on empathy - spot on. None of this has touched my life yet, in a direct way, either, but I have always been accused by my racist mother and abusive brother that I am too sensitive, told “don’t worry about this it does not affect you” etc. But I guess just as my mother and brother are happily willing to ignore the horrors going on, it’s in my DNA, my soul, my mind - I cannot look away. I suppose by my age and experience in the world, it shouldn’t be so shocking that many, many people simply never learned empathy or they have a serious personality disorder that prevents them from having it, feeling for others, have the ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, etc I see so many people from other countries and have many friends in other countries who have more empathy and compassion for what’s happening than so many Americans, it’s true.
I think a point you brought up that I neglected to, is that I fully understand people who are raising kids, working multiple jobs, truly trying to survive, and perhaps cant do as much as some of us - my heart goes out to them. As long as they’re compassionate, I fully understand why they simply don’t have the time or energy to do anything else but get through each day, because of their very real struggles. Just caring for my 86 year old mother and dealing with my own health problems is taxing sometimes. Life goes on for all of us to some extent.
Why I had hoped for more from my own sibling is really an indictment on me, and how delusional I am. Deep down I know he’s selfish, has every narcissistic personality trait, is verbally abusive, etc. so I think it’s on me that I was fooled. He doesn’t take care of my mom, I do. My Dad was very sick when we were teenagers into my 20’s and I took care of my Dad many years, while my brother didn’t even visit him. He has no child to raise, no parent to take care of, has never experienced true hardship in life. So again, I stupidly thought well he’s got time and money and privilege he will surely protest this nightmare - but I’ve learned, you can’t force anyone to be empathetic. A hard lesson when it’s someone you blindly assumed would care about their country. Thank you for your wise, insightful words.

I’ve been chronically ill for 32 years and I have insurance now but I might’ve needed Medicaid but nope, gone. Look my brother has basically been a pretty shitty human being - I just got fooled by his hatred of Trump and his liberal beliefs. But it’s all BS. He wants to talk the talk and yet won’t walk the walk. He’s waiting for everyone else to save the country bc he’s busy with his girlfriend. If I ever had any respect for him, it’s gone. I think he sickens me more than MAGA. He’s completely unworried and indifferent to what’s going on. He is not a good, decent, moral, empathetic human being. I sadly think there are so many people in this country like him. How you cannot feel for your fellow human beings is beyond me. But a lot of people just don’t care.
Denise exactly, I didn't know my daughter was a maga (it rubbed off from her husband 🤦🏽♀️) well I found out once when I told her what was going on and she said oooh well they shouldn't have come here illegally. 😬😡😡😡 I didn't raise any of my kids to be this way, and since then I don't really talk to her as much as I once did. I suspect that the quality of empathy is really what is the difference between those of us who are active, (who post, who research, who march, who read, who make calls etc. ) and those who are just going about living their lives as if nothing had changed. I get myself twisted into fuming crying outraged knots when I hear about Alligator Auschwitz or the negative rulings of the Supreme Court or what the people in Ukraine must be experiencing, and that sparks a ton of activism. But now and again I am stopped short by the fact that, as yet, none of this evil is touching my life directly, and if I just stopped watching and listening to what is going on in DC, I could go about my life enjoying myself, going to the movies, walking in the nice weather, chuckling at the antics of my cat. No stress. It floors me to think that thought. That a large segment of the population may, like Trump and similar people, may just not have any imagination, any empathy, any way to put themselves in another's shoes and feel their pain. Sometimes it feels like there are people in other countries who care more about our troubled times than so many who live here. And then there are the days for me and for again, a large segment of the population, where perhaps it's all they can do to keep up with getting the kids up and dressed for school, doing the laundry, working against strict important deadlines on projects at work or doing two jobs to make ends meet, caring for a sick husband or a mom with dementia. For those people, taking time to immerse oneself in the current political drama--well who has any time or energy left at the end of the day. And what about those being bowled over by falling in love, or madly writing their novel, or training for the Olympics...or cleaning up after a tragic flood... I honor anyone who is taking the time to pay attention, to contribute time and energy, to worry and care, to support people like Aaron and those hardworking elected officials that we hear of who are standing up and using their voices and whatever power they have to do good. What a complex world we are living in....

Janice, you make so many excellent points. Your comments on empathy - spot on. None of this has touched my life yet, in a direct way, either, but I have always been accused by my racist mother and abusive brother that I am too sensitive, told “don’t worry about this it does not affect you” etc. But I guess just as my mother and brother are happily willing to ignore the horrors going on, it’s in my DNA, my soul, my mind - I cannot look away. I suppose by my age and experience in the world, it shouldn’t be so shocking that many, many people simply never learned empathy or they have a serious personality disorder that prevents them from having it, feeling for others, have the ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, etc I see so many people from other countries and have many friends in other countries who have more empathy and compassion for what’s happening than so many Americans, it’s true.
I think a point you brought up that I neglected to, is that I fully understand people who are raising kids, working multiple jobs, truly trying to survive, and perhaps cant do as much as some of us - my heart goes out to them. As long as they’re compassionate, I fully understand why they simply don’t have the time or energy to do anything else but get through each day, because of their very real struggles. Just caring for my 86 year old mother and dealing with my own health problems is taxing sometimes. Life goes on for all of us to some extent.
Why I had hoped for more from my own sibling is really an indictment on me, and how delusional I am. Deep down I know he’s selfish, has every narcissistic personality trait, is verbally abusive, etc. so I think it’s on me that I was fooled. He doesn’t take care of my mom, I do. My Dad was very sick when we were teenagers into my 20’s and I took care of my Dad many years, while my brother didn’t even visit him. He has no child to raise, no parent to take care of, has never experienced true hardship in life. So again, I stupidly thought well he’s got time and money and privilege he will surely protest this nightmare - but I’ve learned, you can’t force anyone to be empathetic. A hard lesson when it’s someone you blindly assumed would care about their country. Thank you for your wise, insightful words.
Exactly I noticed a while back when I posted things like recalls on food or missing kids I'd always get responses from family and friends but it's been about two months when I post no views not even to my story line. Which is the 24 hr one. And I know more ppl will check that out then regular fb timelines. Also on IG I sent out (@) to ppl in gov who I thought would/could help with the ppl being dropped out of the cargo planes. And IG blocked me for two days they don't want us getting info out. I hope though the ppl I sent that video to got it. 🤞🏽 And hopefully they're looking into the situation. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I read a few years ago that cursive wristing is not going to be taught in elementary schools. Is this still the state of education? The system is thus. You have a job working for someone else, taxes are automatically taken out of your pay check. You invest in stocks, fake coins, or whatever, you don't get automatic deductions from trading income, but with a good accountant can rack up zero total federal income tax due via tax write offs at the end of each year. That's my take....please correct any misconceptions on my part. or explain the class differences in taxation better.
