Most of the energy of an electric car goes into carrying their extremely heavy battery around while they're being re-charged by coal and natural gas power plants. The energy return on investment of these things are so negatively obscene only via federal government subsidization could Musk have survived and thrived selling them.
Also, the mining that goes into finding the materials for the battery is extremely toxic, and if we turned every vehicle electric tomorrow, we'd have to turn much of the world itself into a mine to get enough materials to make the batteries and feed the power plants to run them.

Tesla makes money by selling carbon credits to other companies. Basically they're subsidized by the US government in order to make profit
Not to mention there's no way to recycle those batteries.
