The purity judgments need to be put on pause while we fight the regime.

We need as many people against Trump and this administration as we can get. Newsom included.

Expand full comment
Calypso Maniccia's avatar

You can still do both, without throwing different minority groups under the bus.

On the other hand, I do appreciate Newsom for standing up for what's right and fighting Trump doing blatantly wrong and illegal things. At the same time, not blindly supporting people is important, that's how we get things like Maga w/ Trump.

Expand full comment
✨Reli✨'s avatar

I’m not blindly supporting. I am not happy with Newsom’s opinion on trans people.

But Trump is the front and center threat right now. We get rid of this regime and we get rid of 75% of the problems when it comes to the rights we are fighting for - including for trans people.

Expand full comment
Calypso Maniccia's avatar

Thank you for clarifying, I took your original message as ignoring that issue. I apologize for that.

And while I do agree with this, you can still support Newsom and other people fighting Trump, while also not pushing bad things that Newsom (and others) are doing to the side. There's already a trend with Democrats siding with Trump on trans issues, and pushing those issues to the side will end up snowballing that trend onto more Democrats.

Nobody deserves to be persecuted the way trump is persecuting the trans community but Newsom is doing the exact right thing by not talking about it. Now is not the time to focus on an issue that involves less than 1% of the population. It only serves to rile up the maga idiots and cause them to reject everything else we are fighting because all they see then is that β€œwoke shit”. The danger to democracy, the collapse of checks and balances, the destruction of our economy is all blah, blah, blah to them once they hear transgender. They use it as an excuse to point at us and say, β€œthere, see, libs are trying to turn our boys into girls” and aren’t willing to move outside that β€œwoke” prejudice.

Fight the trans battle another day once we’ve saved our country.

Expand full comment
Shay Gray's avatar

Everything riles them up, so I fail to see your point. My guess is that you and everyone else who is saying that this is not a priority right now..he has β€˜more important things to worry about’ and quoting the small percentage of trans people who are affected…this shows me you are not trans and you don’t have a loved one who is either. Otherwise hopefully you wouldn’t be talking about how their safety and basic human rights are something that we can table for now, because it’s simply not that important in the big picture.

If you had anyone close to you who was losing access to life saving medication, who was being excluded from the sports and activities they were doing for years, forcibly outed in their community and having their safety compromised…any number of other things that is happening to trans people daily…you would understand that just waiting around for the right time to have that little chat when it’s more convenient is not the way. Trans people deserve to live their lives and be protected, too.

Expand full comment
Calypso Maniccia's avatar

This. I see so many people, not only in your replies here, saying so many similar things. It just seems like some people don't have empathy for groups of people who they don't know personally, it's really concerning.

It just seems so easy for many of them to throw trans people under the bus because it is convenient for them personally.

Expand full comment
Candace Lucas's avatar

I have complete empathy for trans people. They have very hard lives and deserve better but maga does not have empathy. I’m saying there are people who might be on the fence about turning away from maga and constantly talking about trans rights turns them off and pushes them away. They base their entire decision about who to vote for on that one issue, and that issue turns them towards the vicious monsters for one reason…the viscous monsters also hate trans people.

Expand full comment
Calypso Maniccia's avatar

You say you have empathy for trans people, but are willing to completely ignore them for the sake of people that are transphobic doesn't line up. Essentially blaming the people that are being discriminated against, for being discriminated against.

And like Shay said in another reply, maga is hateful to everyone that aren't exactly like them. If it isn't trans people, it'll be someone else.

Expand full comment
Calypso Maniccia's avatar

Newsom isn't just not saying anything about trans rights/people, he is actively doing harmful things towards trans people. He invited Charlie Kirk onto his podcast and agreed with multiple transphobic comments he made, and even caved into Trumps demands involving trans athletes.

Also throwing trans people under the bus is extremely harmful and outright disrespectful. Completely ignoring a minority group, because they are a minority, is horrible. You fight Trump by fighting ALL the horrible things he stands for, you don't get to pick and choose what is convenient.

Expand full comment
amber lovin's avatar

It’s always a priority to stand up for people that need it. I understand that some things feel less immediate to some and we can’t express all the things in the same second. This stuff doesn't really make mainstream news, but is still definitely concerning to see what some Democrats, especially Newsom, are caving into regarding trans rights.

Expand full comment
Juli Indica's avatar

It’s not caving on trans rights to acknowledge that cis females have an issue competing with trans females. They have legitimate concerns and it was addressed in a very fair way so that they could still compete in sports. Having to constantly defend these girls against your all or nothing is what will turn or Democrats against trans.

Expand full comment
Calypso Maniccia's avatar

While part of that might be true, every conservative state which has enacted bans on HRT for minors (and trying to ban adults now as well) has always started with sports. MAGA and other people use the sports argument as a stepping stone to get to what they want, and people caving on that leads to more harmful things being brought to the trans community.

And even besides that, the fact that no one ever brings up trans men in the sports conversation shows that those people don't care about 'fairness', they're just trying to use it as a stepping stone to escalate.

Expand full comment

Oh and by the way Trans be transβ€”but no WAY IN HELL should they be competing in gender specific sporting events. Boston Marathon is having a nightmare with this? And I personally was unseated from a podium place by a transitioning male-female. Men run faster than women . Period. Google the Boston qualification times.

If Trans want to compete? They can do so in their OWN categories. I’m fine with that.

But a man transitioning as a woman has NO BUSINESS competing against me. And he/she has NO BUSINESS knocking me off a podium. None.

Please tell Governor Newsom to stop trying to take away the raises for state employees that we are scheduled to get on 07/01/2025. Our unions fought hard for our contracts, and Governor Newsom ratified the contracts himself. State employees are not at fault for California's budget crisis; we shouldn't be punished for it again! The cost of living in CA is hard enough to manage; we don't deserve to struggle even more due to cancelled raises or furloughs!

What are you even talking about? And why do you immediately resort to being rude and insulting? I didn't insult anyone in my comment.

This is straight from our union:

"Local 1000’s bargaining team made one thing very clear to the State’s team: We will not accept any proposal that doesn’t honor our July 3% raise. Our contract was ratified by our membership and passed by the California legislature. Any attempt to cancel our scheduled pay raise is misguided and unfair.

And the legislature agrees. The California Assembly and Senate are standing with us to reject Governor Newsom’s attempt to cancel our upcoming 3% wage increase.

Right now, bargaining is suspended while we ramp up our efforts to support the Legislature’s decision to stand with workers. We are taking every opportunityβ€”in our worksites and through the political processβ€”to make sure our voices are heard, and our contracts are upheld.

Governor Newsom still retains the power of the pen and could veto any budget line item he doesn’t like, including our 3% salary increase. But we have something just as powerful as Governor Newsom’s penβ€”We have the people. We have YOU."
