What on Earth did Hegseth have to contribute to running the Defense Department? lol. See, we share this mindset that competence and leadership are essential qualities, but DT and his MAGA cultists like ‘performance’, as in putting on a show. The over the top rhetoric against liberals and moderates is attractive to them, no qualifications necessary.

He should be sent to cecot

Expand full comment
Party beamer's avatar

Sorry, but if you ever been to Leavenworth? I get what you’re saying about El Salvador, but have you ever been to Leavenworth? There’s a lot more traitors in Leavenworth and I’m sure Pete‘s DT‘s…man, not good.

Expand full comment
Cris's avatar

I’ve never been to either. I know nothing about Leavenworth. So I’m being sincere when I ask, what would make that worse than sending him to cecot, where he’d be sharing a cell with 100 other men who have to share a bucket of water to drink, have no access to the outside world, have no access to a phone, visitation, recreation, regular meals, any council, no chance of ever being free, doesn’t speak the language, regular unregulated torture, no kind of citizenship, and where he would virtually disappear without ever knowing whether or not he even still exists?

Expand full comment
Party beamer's avatar

Because I think Trump would make the president of El Salvador intervene. I think he’d get special treatment in El Salvador that others don’t. We don’t have to agree. Just my opinion and luckily right now, in America, we’re entitled to them.

Expand full comment
Cris's avatar

I know you’re entitled to your opinion. I’ve learned a lot about cecot, but know nothing about Leavenworth; that’s why I was sincerely asking the question, while stating the truths I know about cecot. I was simply looking for a comparison, that made you choose one over the other. I see your point, but it’s not based in reality. However, I firmly based my opinion on the fact that both scenarios are, unfortunately, completely hypothetical. Hegseth won’t be going to either prison. Given the current regime, I don’t believe he’ll be charged or prosecuted at all. Of course I agree that Trump would intervene if he were sent to Cecot. But, because both scenarios are completely fantastical, I’d choose Cecot. Let’s face it, even IF anything were to move forward, legally, with Hegseth, Trump would just pardon him. That is the reality of the current political climate in which we live.

Agreed...read "The Hot House," by journalist Pete Earley. He spent time there in 1984, not as a prisoner, but as a journalist, with unlimited access. He presents frightening stories about some of the most dangerous criminals in America, the prison's first black warden struggling to win the respect of prisoners and guards alike, and the two dominant emotions...fear and anger.

It's a gripping read, from start to finish.

The gut wrenching, truly terrifying reality of the prison industrial complex.

I’m sure the book is a well written, well researched read. Thing is, I don’t need to go to Hell to get the point that it’s a bad place. Personally, I don’t have the bandwidth- mentally, physically, emotionally, energetically- for any more horror. Cudos to those who can compartmentalize the e exposure to the deep dive into Dante’s Inferno come to life right here in our midst. I. Just. Cannot.

Expand full comment
Kiwiwriter47's avatar

Understood...and I would not require you to. I merely note the ghastly nature of the place.

The place is appalling...there is something wrong with human beings that we have these prisons. Some of the prisoners described are horrific. They are sadistic and cruel both on the inside and outside.

We also see guards who are very aware that while they control the locks, gates, and walls, the inmates control the cells and corridors. And some disintegrate...one guard commits suicide. After his death, we learn about his ordeal as a victim of parental abuse.

My only point is that we have the largest prison system in the world, prisons-for-profit, massive recidivism, and the popular solution: "Lock 'em up and throw away the key" DOES. NOT. WORK.

When we put people away, they have to be housed, fed, clothed, and that requires money, guards, and resources. It's not like the end of an action movie where the cop kills the villain, so there's no need of a trial, or an episode of "Murder, She Wrote," where the character who was most helpful to Jessica Fletcher for 45 minutes confesses his/her commission of the crime, goes off with the police, and is replaced next week by another special guest villain.

It's a mess.

But I subscribed to you.
