Agreed, those in the Biden Administration should be held accountable for the devastating floods in Carolina. Where was Biden? Where was FEMA?, Why did FEMA stop locals and charity groups from helping. SHAME ON YOU AARON: FAKE NEWS the NWS provided a timeline for the warning, which shows they had issued a flood warning on July 3 and additional warnings 3 hours before the flash floods. Wow! Not only did you drink the cyanide, you've been sucked into the right-wing echo chamber. (I am not sure why you are talking about Biden. He is no longer president.) The NWS was not fully staffed before the floods. There were enough to issue timely warnings, but they were missing key leadership. They didn't have a science officer or a warning coordinator meteorologist. The NWS can send warnings, but it has no control over whether people heed them. How many times have you heeded NWS warnings? We blow them off. We don't know if NWS knew the magnitude of the flooding. NWS cannot control the speed and scale of the floods. The Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in less than an hour. That would wipe towns off the map. Three hours is not enough time to coordinate an evacuation. And it was the middle of the night. The Mystic River camp notifications were sent via text and email. There is much more information than you're link provides. Perhaps you could try thinking for yourself, ask yourself some questions, and research the answers instead of being told what to think.

That was the minimum time; the initial warnings were nearly 12 hours earlier. They had doubled staff numbers watching the storm. 100% agree NWS or anyone else for that matter, would have struggled to predict 26 foot rise in 45 minutes. Research right back at you,

I'm for this new party if it would split the Republican Party. It would be nice if Liz Cheney & Adam Kinzinger also formed a new party & ran together. And then finally progressives break from the Democratic Party & join with progressive Independents & the various progressive minor parties like the Greens, Progressives, Socialists, Working Families Party & Peace & Freedom Party to form their own new coalition party.

I live in Switzerland where we believe in global warming and legislate (pretty much) accordingly. I have been sickened by Trump's stance, or lack thereof, on climate change. One reason this flood was so devastating is that there is so much more moisture in the air as a result of evaporation due to more heat. Spain, too, recently experienced it's most severe flash floods ever. But the USA has traditionally been one of the world's biggest polluters. And stubborn, stupid Donald Trump exited the Paris Climate Accords, supports selfish oil tycoons, undercuts subventions for clean energy, etc., etc., etc. I am very angry because these policies hurt the USA AND the whole world. That's the crazy part. If you look at any of the meteorological post-mortems by actual experts (Balanced Weather, the Eyewall, etc.), the NWS functioned as normal. All the weather balloons went up when they were supposed to. The staffing was not the issue. They warned the people in charge of weather and warnings that this was likely to happen around 6 pm the day before. The "imminent danger" weather alert was pushed to people's cell phones around 1:15 am, but reception is spotty out there, and if people weren't paying attention... The existing models for these types of situations perform poorly until it's right on top of you. The NOAA cuts will have devastating impact on research that could prevent these tragedies in the future, but they didn't lead to the tragedy we saw this week.

I know. I live in Oklahoma. We need those reports. Weather is a crap shoot at best. A flood like this is a changing situation in minutes. Unfortunately in a remote area communication is spotty. As an engineer that performed root cause analysis for many years - here is what I believe is the central cause - not the NWS:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/other/texas-officials-face-scrutiny-over-response-to-catastrophic-and-deadly-flooding/ar-AA1I2pX1?ocid=socialshare

At 4:03 a.m., the office issued an urgent warning that raised the potential of catastrophic damage and a severe threat to human life.

Jonathan Porter, the chief meteorologist at AccuWeather, a private weather forecasting company that uses National Weather Service data, said it appeared evacuations and other proactive measures could have been undertaken to reduce the risk of fatalities.

“People, businesses, and governments should take action based on Flash Flood Warnings that are issued, regardless of the rainfall amounts that have occurred or are forecast,” Porter said in a statement.

Local officials have said they had not expected such an intense downpour that was the equivalent of months’ worth of rain for the area.

“We know we get rains. We know the river rises,” said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, the county's top elected official. “But nobody saw this coming.”

Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said he was jogging along the river early in the morning and didn't notice any problems at 4 a.m. A little over an hour later, at 5:20 a.m., the water level had risen dramatically and “we almost weren't able to get out of the park,” he said.

*** Rice also noted that the public can become desensitized to too many weather warnings.

No county flood warning system: Kelly said the county considered a flood warning system along the river that would have functioned like a tornado warning siren about six or seven years ago, before he was elected, but that the idea never got off the ground because of the expense.

It sounds like there were also no preliminary measures at all. I am thinking about what we had during Helene here in WNC - FEMA and National Guard were on the ground even before the worst of it started. So, as bad as it was, the moment it was possible to go in - they were ready to go in and they did. In this case, it doesn't sound like there was ANYONE in place to jump in and help out the moment it was possible to do so.

I saw a weather report from CBS Austin. The weather man showed a map with probable rainfall from 5 to 14.5 inches in the large area. Then he poopoo'd it and went to a "more likely senerio" that showed .5 to 1.5 inches of rainfall & said that was much more likely. That was 2 days before the rain/flooding. Looked to me like that weatherman is an alternate facts guy & didn't want to believe what the National Weather Service forecast said. Wonder how many other local TV/radio station weather people ignored it?
