I’m guessing JD, who thinks wives are property and belong at home raising kids, won’t. I’m certain more democrat and independent men will be on board with that. How many women will not get married until that piece of shit is out of office just so they can vote? A lot more than in red counties since it’s the only thing to do there. To help you understand, an EO is typically built on existing law, but possibly not a current or traditional interpretation. We the People voted for this common sense reorganization.

Expand full comment
Janice Darling's avatar

If only it WERE common sense. Presidents are NOT supposed to completely bypass Congress and rule exclusively by one man fiat, which is what the EO's are accomplishing at this moment. If they are built on existing law, why are SO MANY OF THEM found to be unconstitutional and against federal and state laws by Republican and Democratic judges alike? If they are common sense, why doesn't he go through the Congress that his party controls, unless the president already knows that these actions are suspect, slipshod and shady, and wouldn't be accepted by a range of elected representatives across the states. And as for the "reform" and the use of DOGE -- NO business or government entity in their right mind would slash and burn itself in an effort to trim and reform. That also is not common sense. Only myopic Silicon Valley types who are not in touch with the reality that operates in everyday life, the one which take consequences (intended and unintended) into account. These heads of DOGE (mostly millionaires and billionaires) and computer hackers and programmers have no consideration for the actual people who are getting shafted (workers, as well as the the recipients of grants, programs and benefits, as well as the international community whose governance and economies are also getting mashed up in the fray) who are being sacrificed on the altar of maniacal urgency to get all of this done in the 130 days that Musk has been given. It is common sense not to damage the people who voted for you across red states, but that is what is happening. It is common sense to actually TALK with the agencies you have been told to deal with to learn what they do in detail and how they have done it, what they who have the experience think and know is important to reform, to fix, to explore, what has frustrated them as well, and then to use that combined with your own investigations and things you have discovered about how to deal with antiquated technologies, and waste/corruption/fraud to make solid and responsible changes which will last the test of time. To connect and listen, and in doing so to get buy in and cooperation, and then it is a win win for everyone. There is NO NEED to be slamming all of this through unless it is because you know you are involved in illegal, immoral or supra-partisan actions which if people had enough time to focus on, would be amended and corrected. Right now it is a debacle, further divides the country and flames anger, messes up the parts of the system that are working, encourages the hubris that goes before a fall. That may be what the administration and its cronies want, but it is surely not common sense, nor what MAGA people would have voted for had they understood the underlying callousness and ulterior motives of this "new" way of mandating.

The biggest nuance that everyone’s missing is that there is not a single standard state-issued RealId that includes citizenship info. So a state issued RealId drivers license does NOT qualify for the RealId line of valid documents.

The requirement says:

“B) an identification document compliant with the requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-13, Div. B) that indicates the applicant is a citizen of the United States”

See that last part where it says “…that indicates the applicant is a citizen of the [US]” - that’s actually not a standard part of RealId and there is not a single state that has a RealId compliant id that ALSO shows/proves citizenship info as a standard ID. There are 5 states that have an OPTIONAL “Enhanced” RealId that does both (states mostly concentrated along the Canadian border to ease border crossing).

So that means the vast majority of possible voters will fall into the “other” documents category and have to bring extra documents to prove voting eligibility.

Thanks for clarifying. I am fortunate as I did not take my husband’s last name. He is a Virgin and I am Golden. Together we are the Golden-Virgin’s! 😍😂

Expand full comment
Someone Somewhere's avatar

…and just because your state requires you to show docs that prove citizenship when you get your standard RealId doesn’t make your RealId complaint because the state IDs don’t show that info and non-citizens are allowed to get RealId state IDs.

Expand full comment
RK's avatar

I will wait for your proof. That is non-sensical, except maybe in blue states that circumvent other voting sensibilities already.

Expand full comment
Someone Somewhere's avatar

Different states have different documentation requirements and NONE of them display citizenship on their standard state IDs. Some display status which is NOT citizenship. The EO is a legal document that uses legal terms and it never once mentions “status” only “citizenship” which are two distinctly different legal terms. Either the author of the HB (which is almost same language as the EO) is an idiot or the language is purposeful. In either case, it’s a problem.

Expand full comment
RK's avatar

RealID requires a birth certificate ……. Done.

Expand full comment
Someone Somewhere's avatar

Requirements for getting an Id are separate from what the Id displays or is used for. RealIds establish status not citizenship. They also don’t display any citizenship info on the Id which is the key requirement.

Expand full comment
RK's avatar

Birth certificate establishes both.

Expand full comment
Someone Somewhere's avatar

Also, for the “just get your birth certificate” or “just get a passport” crowd, the goalposts have been moved there as well: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT239Wr3T/

TLDR; 3 family members request passports. American-sounding last names get issued but Spanish-sounding last name is kicked out with additional docs requested of “early childhood records” in addition to the long form version of the birth certificate (short form version she supplied wasn’t good enough).

Expand full comment
Someone Somewhere's avatar

No one is arguing that. But just because you used it to get a RealId doesn’t mean the RealId can act as a surrogate for the birth certificate (it can’t in its current form). You would still need to have a passport or RealId+BirthCertificate in order to register to vote.

Expand full comment
RK's avatar

You have to have a birth certificate or the like to get a Real ID. Thus citizenship is already proven. Been there done that.
