True but he is the figure head. Miller, Vought, and many others are doing the work. That said, they are not nearly as organized as the Nazis were and they are getting more pushback. God help us!

PUSH BACK EVERY DAY!!!!!!!! ACTION every day! Make your voice heard.

Bring it up everywhere with everybody so that the conversation of democracy and resistance to this horrible situation stays present in our minds and as we plan what we will do each day to help. I chat at grocery store line etc etc bc I want to normalize resistance and give permission to those who feel they can't bring it up etc.... we talkin' locker room, grocery store, pretty much every chance I get I put it out there where I am at and am present for a convo, I carry around the red ICE info cards in Spanish and English and give them out to anyone who wants etc etc.

PUSH BACK HARDER. This is the US, land of individualism and straight talk, not Germany of the 1930's. There are similarities in the push for authoritarianism but in the US of the 2020's there sure as hell are differences. Each of us has to be the difference.

well said. I was feeling discouraged a few days ago, and determined that I needed to stop spending most of each day reading the Substacks, answering comments, tearing my heart out over the cruelty of it all. But that doesn't mean that I am going to go silent in everyday life. I even joined the chorus that sings at our local resistance events... See y'all at the rallies on Good Trouble day--July 17. Be LOUD, be PROUD and PUSH BACK.

True.

Hitler was an asshole, through and through. But, he wasn't a stupid man (except in the end, he spread himself too thin).

Trump is a stupid whatever... he didn't and doesn't think this stuff up himself. He has the likes of Miller and others, H Society... that do the thinking. TheRump is just the ugly mug in front of the camera... the Oaf in the Oaful Office.

Depends on how you count... The Reichstag fire in February 1933 and the subsequent Enabling Act in March 1933 were one and two months respectively after his appointment as the Chancellor. It took him a year to combine the roles of Chancellor and President. And five more years to start a world war.

What was "normal" is gone, KB, & this is, as has been said, "the new normal." And we need to act in response, & as rapidly as possible for the sakes of our families, our children, & our nation.

DC Comics's website posts the REAL Superman from 1949 (!) telling school children "your school - like our country - is made up of Americans of many different races, religions, and national origins, so…if you hear anybody talk against a schoolmate, or anyone else, because of his religion, race or national origin – don't wait: tell him THAT KIND OF TALK IS UN-AMERICAN."

I grew up in a world safe to play outdoors in. We left our front entrance unlocked. It seems like we just turned around and now have book bans, medical insecurity, international disdain, financial turmoil, and masked nazis grabbing anyone they like and imprisoning them. Someone. Anyone. Please for the love of God and all that is holy - make it stop!

Expand full comment
Schmendryck's avatar

What is interesting, BL, is your first 2 sentences, if we were to go back a couple of decades, would be the precursor of a longer piece bemoaning some fictional crime-ridden domestic status wherein those "dirty criminals," (all of a certain racial or ethnic persuasion) were running amok & decent (white) people were too afraid to go outside. These seeds were planted literally decades ago, and they began to bear fruit more than a few presidential administrations ago, but what we see now is that poison fruit being eagerly consumed by indoctrinated percentages of our population, all to facilitate the ease with which we have fallen into this budding authoritarianism.

Expand full comment
BL Foster's avatar

It seems like it happened so fast - but we could have nipped it in the bud years ago. Made the KKK and other racist groups illegal. Refused to give Nazi’s a stage. In our noble desires for equality and freedom, we allowed those who squash it to flourish like uncontrolled wildfire.

I’m not a minute in but I wan to share my dismay with two references so far to “alligator Alcatraz.” I wonder how wise it is to substitute the Trump propaganda name for this detention camp? The more it is used by media, the more normal it becomes. It is not normal.

100%. Its a concentration camp for brown people where inmates are kept in kennels not fit for a dog and denied proper medicine, food and water.

Dont let them call it something cutsie and sell t-shirts with MAGA hat wearing alligators. This is not Disney.
