BREAKING: In a striking and unusual move, Chief Justice John Roberts issued a public statement pushing back against Donald Trump’s calls to impeach U.S. District Judge James Boasberg.

Though Roberts did not mention Trump by name, his statement was a clear rebuke of the president’s latest attack on the judiciary, highlighting the constitutional principle that judicial rulings should not be subject to political retaliation.
“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts stated. “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”
The remarks come in response to Trump’s demand that Judge Boasberg, who serves as the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, be impeached. Boasberg recently ruled against Trump in a case involving Trump’s ability to deport Venezuelan migrants under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
Roberts’ statement is remarkable not only for its content but for its rarity.
