Since I retired awhile back I discovered Amazon Kindle a couple years ago and have downloaded many books and magazines since. Now I am looking for a non Amazon alternative. I stopped buying any merchandise from Amazon other than books and I am slowly weaning myself off and trying to gear up to cancel everything Amazon. It’s really aggravating that Bezos is such a POS when he could truly be a positive force for the future with his resources but no, typical billionaire without a conscience.

You might find this list as a useful starting place to find what works for you. Like many, I’m researching alternatives to some of the places I shop, though I’m fortunate to live in a large city that promotes small and local businesses. Hopefully this will help!

I reply with sincere respect. I love the libraries near me. I borrow books & even DVD's. WE do what we can. I believe we best stand to gather when we can be both be honest and kind to with each other. Assumtions get us into murky waters. Offering a library was a good idea. It was the delivery that worried me.

Yes, I have a library card also but I live in a semi-rural area in SoCal where snowstorms and wildfires happen in no particular order so I do mostly digital books. So I am looking at sources that have a wide variety without spending tons of money (and I don’t want a lot of hardcover books to take up space).

I'm in Austin, TX and we have a pretty extensive digital library system. Non-Austin residents can pay a small fee (last I remember it was $20) to gain access to the Austin Public Library system. My dad in Maryland does that with a couple of libraries across the country to get more access to things online. Just an idea! And you'd be supporting libraries.

There's an app called Libby that connects to a local library and you can check out books, digitally. Hope it works for you.

Some libraries offer digital options through Libby or Hoopla. You should check with your local library to see if they provide that service.

Hawaii has a state library system that is amazing. It's a little more expensive- like $100/year for out of state people, but they have had every book i wanted to read.

I’m in a rural area with high wildfire risk and significant snowfall most years as well, and also tend to go digital re: books. I’m grateful for your post and the resource Teresa P. posted in response. Am learning to use the Libby app through our library system.

Aaron, Is AP news and The Guardian independent news sources, as well? I have downloaded their Apps and read them, too. I believe NPR and PBS are independent as well, right? Thank you!

Nancy, although we may be in a small minority there is a movement to move away from Amazon. I am seeing it everyday on posts. It's addictive for some, they offer so much, especially for working families but we're just feeding the oligarchy.

Years ago, in high school journalism, we were taught that the underlying principle was objectivity. Get both sides. Fair representation.

I’m so glad there is still independent media out here - we need it more than ever!

What a small and pathetic snowflake Bezos is, unable to subject his delicate eyes to reading opinions that challenge his own. I kept my Post subscription up to now because they do good reporting on the Middle East and the Gaza/Israel war, and it's not those journalists' fault their boss is how he is. But I don't think I can support this.

This presents a great opportunity for like minded to get together and form the people’s paper!!

This is horrible, I have cancelled my subscription. Also, the video Trump posted this morning is horrible. Is there anyway to impeach? I know there is not, but OMG! Also, I saw a video of Musk at the convention over the weekend and he did not speak coherently! I am worried there might be something a little out of control there! (And I am not referencing anything he identifies with). I am worried there might be a substance issue.
