In a story drawing comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale, a Georgia woman has spent over three months on life support—not for her own survival, but to sustain the pregnancy she was carrying when she was declared brain dead.
And then on top of that horrendous emotional rollercoaster, who's going to be charged for the medical bills?! I'll bet it's not the state of Georgia...
this just shows that they are making a point of showing they are in control. at all costs. they don't care about any of the people or babies involved. they are probably proud of themselves when this gets media coverage.
what if on some level this woman is suffering being forced to be on a ventilator -- even brain dead she is alive -- we cannot discount she feels; and that on some level she feels -- nine weeks pregnant given the choice to have your child on a ventilator brain dead for 9-10 months is so wrong -- God bless the child and may they have no medical issues stemming from this tragedy of losing their mother and then growing up knowing how much pain their life inside her womb caused his family
They should be! It’s because of their ignorance and stupidity this is happening. I would sue that first hospital because they did nothing to get an accurate diagnosis!
First of all, they sent her home without doing any testing as to why she was having a headache. Instead of doing a CT or mri or even a simple ddimer test to see if her blood was clotting. Because she was black and female, these hospitals do not want to find out the reasons why women are having issues. I was going to be discharged and I couldn't breathe. It was blood clots that went to my lungs. If it hadn't been for one ER doctor who had the same autoimmune disease I had, I would not have known about the ddimer bloodtest. It took me about 2 hours and not letting them send me home to get them to do the test, then it was oopsie let's get her on clot busting meds. I hope this hospital gets sued and in particular that doctor that didn't do that simple bloodtest.
That IS how it works in the United States. The debt is left under the estate, and the estate can refuse to pay. It doesn't just pass on to surviving relatives
Haha, send it to the Supreme Court justices who took away women’s rights to their own body!! We know they have tons of cash - Clarence can sell the RV!😂😂
He could sell one seat on his plane for which he sold out America to own and that single seat likely has a value that would pay this woman's medical bills.
They can be told that, but that isn't how it will likely work in practice. In most situations, surviving family isn't responsible for the medical bills of the deceased. It is left to the estate to handle (and the estate can refuse to pay/only pay what is left by insurance, etc). Like all medical debt it can be discharged/forgiven
It would probably result in some type of legal case, in which case there are probably dozens of human rights attorneys who would love to do pro bono work
Better be the state that pays the medical costs. And not just the life support but the health care of the fetus once they determine it can survive outside the womb. But I’m sure we all know how that’ll go over.
Precisely, I told my hubby about it and he uttered one word, 'obscene'. I agree. The lawmakers in these state hate and are threatened by women in equal measures.
I just read on Jessica Valenti’s SubStack that they were in deed charging the family. Government is not helping. I CANNOT imagine what her poor momma is forced to face everyday.
What the actual fuck. If the mother didn’t declare that this is what she would want, then it shouldn’t be done. Is the state going to compensate her poor family for not just the cost of the medical treatment, but all the agony and mental anguish of being forced to keep her body alive? How fucking evil.
The family should write a book. I think a diary format where the voice is the brain-dead daughter counting down the days until she can finally be allowed to die with dignity. A good title may be: "Diary of My Death"
This is disgusting on multiple levels! They should sue the state of Georgia for the cost of the medical bills accrued during this period, since they are being forced by the state to go through it.
The family is the one saying that they had no choice in the matter and that there appears to be fluid in the brain of the fetus, so it is doubtful that it will survive, if it is born at all. So they are torturing a woman, her LIVING child who thinks his mommy is just sleeping, along with the rest of the family, incurring millions of dollars in medical debt for a baby that will probably not survive. Also realize that they will literally have to cut her open to perform a c-section. We would NEVER defile a man's body by requiring organ donation and cutting into his body without his consent. They are literally using ALL her organs without her consent for months!
Bro, what the hell?? The headline alone made me drop what I was doing and just stare at it in shock. This is the country I live in. Are we great again yet? 🇺🇸
This is utterly horrendous that these so called “Christians” think this is ok. Imagine the daily torture on the family. And the medical bills are going to wipe this family out. And the walking brain dead are trying to take Medicaid away for tax cuts for the top 1% because apparently they can’t survive with the money they have after paying no taxes at all. Make that and this make sense.
Everyone should get a will naming a health care proxy, power of attorney and a DNR if that is your choice -- of course it is not everyone's choice but if you don't want to be tortured on a ventilator after you are no longer to have quality of life, swallow, eat, drink water -- a DNR is necessary -- otherwise the hospital unless directed by the family cannot take you off life support.
I am not ashamed to be an American and we the people of this nation have not lost the support and respect of the people of the world.
I am ashamed of our elected officials, and we need to replace every single one of them for they failed us starting with not impeaching Trump after J6. Men made that decision, remember?
If that had been done which would have been the right thing to do versus giving him a pass. we would not be here today, and this woman may have had received better health care the day she presented with that debilitating headache; but most certainly she would not have suffered the indignity of having her corpse used as an incubator for 9-10 months.
And ladies -- we must stop rejecting female candidates for elected and other positions of leadership and power in our culture. We need to stop, in fact, looking to our partners and spouses for approval to vote for a woman.
More women in power and in roles of leadership will result in a better life for all of us. We need the best of the best and that can only happen if EVERYONE no matter gender, race, creed or sexual identity compete for those roles.
Right now, we have a stagnant and shrinking pool of mostly men who are NOT the best of the best. We need more women, but many women themselves do not vote or support other women and that is a visceral reaction we each need to unload not tomorrow or sometime in the future but yesterday.
you are correct, , I voted for, Kamala, and would vote for her again. I’d vote for AOC and rep Crockett whom I’m very impressed with. But when you look at the people in government who have the balls to stand up and fight, it ain’t the guys with the actual balls…it’s women. We need more people like them.
There r so many women with internalized mysogony. They were indoctrinated to think they were lesser than. And the guys...🤷🏻♀️🤦♀️ no voting women. My son did tho, Hillary and Kamala. He was raised right.
Mine too — a millennial so bitterly disappointed when Bernie Sanders was toppled by the Electorate College despite the overwhelming support for Bernie and his “common sense” ideas and platform from my son’s generation. I cannot help but think that Bernie would have beat Trump. That defeat left many of the generations that follow us deeply cynical about the power of one vote. My son votes on the candidate not the gender which keeps him open to all candidates; however, not many since then have impressed him very much. The pool of candidates is fenced off and controlled and the young can see thru it.
“Internalized Misogyny” — Bravo! I was searching for words that describe my observation, and I would not even speak up except for it will be the death knell of our democracy and I’m calling on all women and men to ponder it and get over it fast. We have little time.
It is really simple math. If everyone is welcome overtly without prejudice to the table, our pool of candidates increases and our opportunity to choose ONLY the best of the best if facilitated. I will keep saying this despite the fact to change a culture with words and quickly is unlikely and quite formidable.
And then on top of that horrendous emotional rollercoaster, who's going to be charged for the medical bills?! I'll bet it's not the state of Georgia...
EXACTLY! How much are you willing to put this family through because you philosophically disagree with abortions
this just shows that they are making a point of showing they are in control. at all costs. they don't care about any of the people or babies involved. they are probably proud of themselves when this gets media coverage.

Other sources indicate the fetus has medical issues.
It’s hard to know but this is being done to align with the law not the family. That is what makes it egregious. It seems to be about obeying a law
you cant feel without a brain.
Actually you can react to painful stimulus Barca local level, but not perceived at a cerebral level.
They should be! It’s because of their ignorance and stupidity this is happening. I would sue that first hospital because they did nothing to get an accurate diagnosis!
I would say that as an adult, like anything else, her debts passed with her. Period.
That's not how medical debt works in America.
There are two words I would tell that hospital about a their bills: Fuck Off.
Id laugh in their face. I'm beyond sick at this story. No way in hell is this ok
That IS how it works in the United States. The debt is left under the estate, and the estate can refuse to pay. It doesn't just pass on to surviving relatives
There are two words I would tell that hospital about their bills: Fuck Off.
There are two words I would tell that hospital about their bills: Fuck Off.
Maybe her debt passes to her surviving child?
Her debts, including medical debts, are paid by her estate.
That's not accurate in most cases.
Send the bill to trump he’s got billions
Haha, send it to the Supreme Court justices who took away women’s rights to their own body!! We know they have tons of cash - Clarence can sell the RV!😂😂
He could sell one seat on his plane for which he sold out America to own and that single seat likely has a value that would pay this woman's medical bills.
Meanwhile, Marjorie Taylor Greene will make sure Medicaid coverage will be gone for both mother and Baby before the baby is born
I was just coming here to say this! Her family and her insurance should NOT have to pay
The family has already stated that they’ll be responsible for the medical bills. 🫠
They can be told that, but that isn't how it will likely work in practice. In most situations, surviving family isn't responsible for the medical bills of the deceased. It is left to the estate to handle (and the estate can refuse to pay/only pay what is left by insurance, etc). Like all medical debt it can be discharged/forgiven

pay it off one dollar a month
Better be the state that pays the medical costs. And not just the life support but the health care of the fetus once they determine it can survive outside the womb. But I’m sure we all know how that’ll go over.
Women have no right to our own bodies why is this a surprise. Remember they know more about our lives and health more than we do.
Precisely, I told my hubby about it and he uttered one word, 'obscene'. I agree. The lawmakers in these state hate and are threatened by women in equal measures.
Those medical bills will be in the millions.
I just read on Jessica Valenti’s SubStack that they were in deed charging the family. Government is not helping. I CANNOT imagine what her poor momma is forced to face everyday.
I came to say this. Except it shouldn’t be the State, the taxpayers, it should come directly from their greed stuffed pockets!!
I was thinking the exact same thing! It’s all so horrible!
Exactly. There is SO much wrong with this...
this is horrible news!!
A perfect example of them not being pro-life, but pro-birth.
i would say pro-control.
This makes me so sick. Her family spoke out. This is between her family and her doctor. PERIOD Government should have zero say here.
This is disgusting on multiple levels! They should sue the state of Georgia for the cost of the medical bills accrued during this period, since they are being forced by the state to go through it.
this is so sick. that child will be born and have NO MOTHER. sick sick sick.
That is the most wanted baby for adoption.
even more sick. the adoption/foster industry profits off those poor kids.
Can you think before you comment? It would save time.
The baby’s going to go to the family.
Thank goodness. Somebody finished the article before commenting!
what does finishing the article have to do with anything? the child will not have their mother. period point blank.
The family is the one saying that they had no choice in the matter and that there appears to be fluid in the brain of the fetus, so it is doubtful that it will survive, if it is born at all. How sick r u? That fetus will never survive, if it does? I bet u the medical issues will be awful
I dont believe the fetus will survive. It's too early in the pregnancy. Her body cannot sustain and grow a child in this condition.
Bro, what the hell?? The headline alone made me drop what I was doing and just stare at it in shock. This is the country I live in. Are we great again yet? 🇺🇸
I mean, were we ever? 😬
9 WEEKS?! WTF! This is disturbing. I'm so sorry for this family.
I almost vomitted!!! This makes me physically ill to think about! The torture her family must be going through! I am SO sorry for them! Georgia sux!!
Wtf 🙉
This is utterly horrendous that these so called “Christians” think this is ok. Imagine the daily torture on the family. And the medical bills are going to wipe this family out. They dont need to pay a dime. Nobody can force them to pay.
Look ahead to women needing a legal document to prevent their bodies from being used in this manner.
I sure will
Of course women have few choices with their bodies while they “live”.
U realize the state will ignore it if there is a pregnancy right? They dont care about ur dnr. They will force pregnancy.
I hope the state is paying the hospital bills. This is insane on so many levels.
This is mortifying
Yep y’all it’s horrifying and mortifying
Mea culpa! Sorry, sorry, sorry. Don’t mean to be the grammar police but I think you mean horrifying. Mortifying is the same as embarrassing.
It's also mortifying (embarrassing) since it reflects so badly on Georgia and our country under the GOP.
agree it is a mortifying example of what we have lost which is all of our rights for which I am as much horrified as I am mortified
That is true! They are an utter embarrassment. Makes me ashamed to be American
I am not ashamed to be an American and we the people of this nation have not lost the support and respect of the people of the world.

I've read before that this usually isn't successful anyway. Ugh.
I knew she was Black before searching for the story! Doctors don’t take our concerns seriously! Shame on Northside and the state of GA,
