And then on top of that horrendous emotional rollercoaster, who's going to be charged for the medical bills?! I'll bet it's not the state of Georgia...

EXACTLY! How much are you willing to put this family through because you philosophically disagree with abortions

this just shows that they are making a point of showing they are in control. at all costs. they don't care about any of the people or babies involved. they are probably proud of themselves when this gets media coverage.

what if on some level this woman is suffering being forced to be on a ventilator -- even brain dead she is alive -- we cannot discount she feels; and that on some level she feels -- nine weeks pregnant given the choice to have your child on a ventilator brain dead for 9-10 months is so wrong -- God bless the child and may they have no medical issues stemming from this tragedy of losing their mother and then growing up knowing how much pain their life inside her womb caused his family

It’s hard to know but this is being done to align with the law not the family. That is what makes it egregious. It seems to be about obeying a law

First of all, they sent her home without doing any testing as to why she was having a headache. Instead of doing a CT or mri or even a simple ddimer test to see if her blood was clotting. Because she was black and female, these hospitals do not want to find out the reasons why women are having issues. I was going to be discharged and I couldn't breathe. It was blood clots that went to my lungs. If it hadn't been for one ER doctor who had the same autoimmune disease I had, I would not have known about the ddimer bloodtest. It took me about 2 hours and not letting them send me home to get them to do the test, then it was oopsie let's get her on clot busting meds. I hope this hospital gets sued and in particular that doctor that didn't do that simple bloodtest.

The family has already stated that they’ll be responsible for the medical bills. 🫠

Expand full comment
JD's avatar

They can be told that, but that isn't how it will likely work in practice. In most situations, surviving family isn't responsible for the medical bills of the deceased. It is left to the estate to handle (and the estate can refuse to pay/only pay what is left by insurance, etc). Like all medical debt it can be discharged/forgiven

It would probably result in some type of legal case, in which case there are probably dozens of human rights attorneys who would love to do pro bono work

The family is the one saying that they had no choice in the matter and that there appears to be fluid in the brain of the fetus, so it is doubtful that it will survive, if it is born at all. So they are torturing a woman, her LIVING child who thinks his mommy is just sleeping, along with the rest of the family, incurring millions of dollars in medical debt for a baby that will probably not survive. Also realize that they will literally have to cut her open to perform a c-section. We would NEVER defile a man's body by requiring organ donation and cutting into his body without his consent. They are literally using ALL her organs without her consent for months!

Everyone should get a will naming a health care proxy, power of attorney and a DNR if that is your choice -- of course it is not everyone's choice but if you don't want to be tortured on a ventilator after you are no longer to have quality of life, swallow, eat, drink water -- a DNR is necessary -- otherwise the hospital unless directed by the family cannot take you off life support.

Expand full comment
RAISSA's avatar

I am not ashamed to be an American and we the people of this nation have not lost the support and respect of the people of the world.

I am ashamed of our elected officials, and we need to replace every single one of them for they failed us starting with not impeaching Trump after J6. Men made that decision, remember?

If that had been done which would have been the right thing to do versus giving him a pass. we would not be here today, and this woman may have had received better health care the day she presented with that debilitating headache; but most certainly she would not have suffered the indignity of having her corpse used as an incubator for 9-10 months.

And ladies -- we must stop rejecting female candidates for elected and other positions of leadership and power in our culture. We need to stop, in fact, looking to our partners and spouses for approval to vote for a woman.

More women in power and in roles of leadership will result in a better life for all of us. We need the best of the best and that can only happen if EVERYONE no matter gender, race, creed or sexual identity compete for those roles.

Right now, we have a stagnant and shrinking pool of mostly men who are NOT the best of the best. We need more women, but many women themselves do not vote or support other women and that is a visceral reaction we each need to unload not tomorrow or sometime in the future but yesterday.

you are correct, , I voted for, Kamala, and would vote for her again. I’d vote for AOC and rep Crockett whom I’m very impressed with. Mine too — a millennial so bitterly disappointed when Bernie Sanders was toppled by the Electorate College despite the overwhelming support for Bernie and his “common sense” ideas and platform from my son’s generation. I cannot help but think that Bernie would have beat Trump. That defeat left many of the generations that follow us deeply cynical about the power of one vote. My son votes on the candidate not the gender which keeps him open to all candidates; however, not many since then have impressed him very much. The pool of candidates is fenced off and controlled and the young can see thru it.

RAISSA's avatar

“Internalized Misogyny” — Bravo! I was searching for words that describe my observation, and I would not even speak up except for it will be the death knell of our democracy and I’m calling on all women and men to ponder it and get over it fast. We have little time.

It is really simple math. If everyone is welcome overtly without prejudice to the table, our pool of candidates increases and our opportunity to choose ONLY the best of the best if facilitated. I will keep saying this despite the fact to change a culture with words and quickly is unlikely and quite formidable.
