The Trump Administration fired the entire civil rights division at the Department of Homeland Security, El Salvador rejected migrants improperly deported under the Alien Enemies Act, and more

Today is March 21st and here is your evening news rundown. I am in Panama right now learning about the Panama Canal and what people here think about what’s happening in the United States. It is fascinating!

With that, here is all the news you missed:

  • At a hearing today on whether the Trump Administration defied Judge Boasberg’s order, an ACLU attorney said some people sent to El Salvador were later flown back because they either weren’t Venezuelan or were women—and the Salvadoran government refused to accept them. This is significant as the Alien Enemies Act proclamation only covered Venezuelan men over the age of 14. Judge Boasberg made it clear he intends to get to the bottom of whether his order was ignored. Stay tuned.

  • The Trump administration has reportedly fired almost the entire civil rights division at the Department of Homeland Security, according to the New York Times.

  • At a town hall, Republican Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT) warned that the U.S. risks sliding into authoritarianism if the executive branch isn’t reined in, according to ABC News.

  • The U.S. is set to start importing eggs from South Korea, according to Politico.

  • Joe and Jill Biden are looking to reenter the political spotlight, according to NBC News.

  • Trump’s FBI has reduced staffing in the office that handles domestic terrorism and eliminated a key tool used to track these cases — a move that, according to sources familiar with the situation, could weaken efforts to combat white supremacist and anti-government extremist threats.

  • NEW: The National Weather Service is halting weather balloon launches in Omaha, Nebraska, and Rapid City, South Dakota, because of staffing shortages.

  • Flights from Houston and Dallas to Austin were put on hold after the airport issued a ground stop due to an FAA staffing issue.

  • The Justice Department has filed a motion to remove federal Judge Beryl Howell from overseeing the Administration's case against the Perkins Coie law firm, claiming she’s shown a consistent bias against Trump in her courtroom.

See you in the morning.
