No flights at all would hurt a different demographic than SNAP benefits do. That would put more pressure on Republicans to actually negotiate with Democrats. They did anyway during Reagan’s Presidency because they wanted better pay and less work hours. Reagan fired all the ATC workers that went on strike. I cannot spend an extra $30 a month for anything...and now that I'm a furloughed fed worker (can't even file for unemployment) I'm cutting back to one meal/day, wearing clothes til they smell funky to save on laundry, stopped watering my 500sq ft "doggie lawn" to save water (live in AZ), make every drive from home count for at least two errands, borrow wi-fi router from the library, trying to grow a "victory garden" but degraded/absent lumbar cartilage makes that difficult...if anyone can suggest other ways to save money...lmk

If you look online you may be able to buy direct from farms and often save money that way too, plus it will likely be fresher food. A lot of food co-ops started informally as a few families buying together.
Hit a food bank a couple times a month. And, not a way to save money, but if you're ok with animals, offer to walk dogs or take care of cats. Cats are easier - you can generally go once a day at whatever time.
In some areas pet sitting is quite competitive. Since you drive, you can also do errands for people for pay or at least for gas, depending on whom you are helping. If you can get people to place their order on a store website, then the store would have it all ready for you to pick up, once you figure out how the store handles a third party picking it up for the person who ordered. You could tell people you only go on, say, Mondays and Thursdays so that they have to adapt to your schedule rather than the other way around. (I'm stopping short of recommending you get a job working for Uber or Instacart. I'm assuming you don't want a stressful low-paying job but just supplemental money.)
