They can redact all they want but how will that look when the survivors provide the names to Massie and Greene and those 2 provide those names on the floor.

I just read about that on the Meidas Touch substack--an awesome offer, Massie and Greene....I am certain that although it is protected speech on the floor of the house, they still would be opening themselves up for retribution in other ways. This, I imagine, is now a "life or death" feeling fight for those whose names are in the files as their fortunes, their reputations, their families, their companies would all be affected by being convicted or even named. Hey--wasn't that what our Founding Fathers pledged--"our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor" in the founding of a new country? These sleezeballs were willing to lose "THEIR lives, THEIR fortunes and THEIR honor" for the great prize of taking the virginity of young teenagers who were doing this under duress, or for promised great job or money for their family returns. Such honorable men (NOT), who can't seem to keep their zippers up....

I'm probably wrong because of Occam's Razor, but I wondered a little if that "hot mic" moment wasn't on purpose, because that is yet another hint to threaten Republican legislators before they vote on the discharge petition. After all, if your name or that of someone connected to you can be redacted, that could buy a Trump-friendly vote.

Buying votes: it's what Trump loves to do. I wouldn't put anything past these freakers and their dirty tricks. Boy are they terrified of an Epstein reveal.

Redacting Republicans from the Epstein files is like trying to Sharpie out the devil from a medieval mural. You can blot the paint, but the horns still show through.

Blessed be the survivors who keep speaking, louder than censors and hotter than any mic. Their truth doesn’t need the DOJ’s permission slip.

How do they compensate for such a mammoth disconnect?

On a more serious note, a friend of mine lives in Poland. I have been over a couple of times to visit him, which was great fun, but he says I should come over more often as therapy - because women living in the US should experience what it's like to be in a country, where SA arrest and conviction rate is over 90% and where you can walk around in the middle of the night, and it's fine.

Normalization must be repelled by individual actions and behavior. Even though lots more folks do far more things that used to be taboo, it's still possible to practice ethics, just as it is still possible to live and demonstrate a life that is grounded on respect for the civic life we all share, in many different ways. I've been reading a book about a man who was three times elected governor of Minnesota, Luther Youngdahl. He later became a member of that State's Supreme Court...still reading, and appreciating the clarity and readability of such an old book. His was indeed in interesting and invigorating life!

My theory is that all of us who are not MAGA Trumpers, and don’t agree with anything they’re doing, constantly get shocked and frustrated BECAUSE we’re inherently nice people. Nice people are just wired differently than hateful criminal types. That’s why we have a difficult time getting ahead of them or conceiving of what they might do. We aren’t devious. We don’t connive like they do. What they think and do is inconceivable to us. That’s where the adage “Nice guys finish last” creeps in. But then there is “He who laughs last laughs best.” We don’t need to work at staying nice. We just are naturally, as long as we don’t convert to MAGA.

Oh, necessarily! It's not only possible - it is essential! I am reminded of all the examples - real and fictional - of people surviving terrible times by retaining what they could of their humanity, in the best sense.

The best fictional representation is Fahrenheit 451 - where, deprived of the ability to have books, people trained themselves to memorize them so that they would not be lost.

When it comes to real examples, I have my family - all my grandparents were WWII veterans. And, after that, we all lived through decades of the Soviet Union, each surviving through something essential. My paternal grandmother kept her faith - she was a devout Christian, and that was seriously discriminated against back then. My parents were dissident intellectuals and used their connections abroad to smuggle in bootleg copies of blacklisted books.

So... at present... whatever it means to us to be human - the best version of human - we have to stick with it. Otherwise, there is no surviving this nightmare.

Having actually witnessed some world-changing events, and summoning every bit of experience I have with regression-based forecasting - predicting the future based on the past - I would say this will take decades to fix. Possibly longer. And there will be some effects that will likely have global ripple effects for centuries to come.

Even if ALL of this ended today... If the entire administration just got... plucked off the surface of the Earth and all of their supporters suddenly realized the error of their ways... it would still take decades of effort and extremely sensible governance to sort all this out. Provided we don't have any other major cataclysms.

On one hand, I want to have the same level of faith as some of my favorite sci fi writers, especially the dreamers of the 1960s and 1970s, who believed that, after a period of great turmoil and growing pains, humanity would finally grow up enough to start acting like someone at the top of the evolutionary ladder. On the other hand... given the evidence... it's not looking good right now.

I agree with you, except that we are not progressing toward enlightenment. When you are in the swamp, up to your waist in alligators, it's harder to see that the swamp is slowly draining away. IOW, if you get enough distance from the world, you'll see plainly that we have and continue to move forward. Just think of how far man has progressed, not only in science and technology, but also in his understanding and tolerance and sensitivity to the needs and rights of others since the dark ages. Hell, even since the 1960s our progress has been phenomenal. Don't let the ignorant, who are the ones who always dig in their heels and hold us back, distract you from all the evidence of that progress. Right now, with this worldwide swing toward authoritarianism, we are simply experiencing the reactive back-swing to our evolution. It was inevitable But impotent to stop the forward progression of mankind toward enlightenment. Because one cannot unlearn or kill a truth. Once mankind has conceived of anything, he brings it into being, be it a cure for disease, or a better world order. It's as if we are not seeing it in our future, but in our past, a fait accompli We WILL make our country a truly great nation, when all this fascism has run its course. It's a fait accompli.

In the meantime, let's keep the PIG on edge, fearful and enraged, until it drops dead of heart failure.

And yes, when you ARE living in the interesting times (re: that famous Chinese curse) it's kind of hard to remember that this is just your own, personal, tiny scrap of history. Especially if you are not someone big and important but an ordinary person without much influence.

I am, however, reminded of someone I read in a book when I was a little girl. This might provide some measure of optimism. "A great man is someone who carries out great deeds. But an ordinary man who works happily and brings joy to others is also a great man."

You never know, though. It’s like playing red/black on the roulette table. You figure if you lose, all you have to do is keep doubling down until you win it all back plus a little more. Chances are the other color will come up eventually, right? But there’s that double zero green on the wheel which tilts the odds toward the house. We might not see it, but that that double zero green could pop up that we have zero control over and we could have a few replacements in SCOTUS from a liberal president in just a couple of years, or impeachment could happen, or any number of things could change. The only certain thing is that change is constant. Like time passing, you can’t stop it. If nothing else, just hanging on surviving and waiting keeping the kernel of goodness going could be all we have to do.

Expand full comment
Maria K.'s avatar

That is an interesting analogy. However, let us also keep in mind that we are not dealing with a mindless ball bouncing through a mindless roulette, guided by Newton's laws. We are talking about historic change that is driven by living breathing human beings. Not quite the same. I know a little social psychology, but not enough to make prognostications based on it. It would be interesting to hear what experienced social psychologists have to say about all this.

The only protection the victims have is to make their names known, very publicly, along with their accusations. If they all started disappearing, the jig would be up. Even the goddamn stupid Repugnants have to have realized this. They murdered Epstein and undoubtedly Virginia, and probably others, but separately, over a period of time, but now the Epstein case is top of mind in the whole world, and those women are showing their faces and speaking publicly, so they SHOULD be safe. (I would, however, if I were one of them, want a heavy and competent body guard.) The key is that they all make their accusations at once, together, so Trump can't pick off one to use as a warning to the others. Hope to God they realize this, and aren't a bunch of dumbass libs who have no clue how dangerous the Repugnants really are. You know...too NICE to recognize a murderous foe when he's standing right in front of you!
