Banning mail-in voting would abolish elections in at least one state that no longer has traditional polling places — maybe there are more, I don't know. It would be virtually impossible for them to create a network of in-person polling places that quickly, and the cost would be staggering. In any case, Trump cannot unilaterally take over elections. No, it would be the same as voting AGAINST it. Because if the Supreme Court did not say OK, elections systems would remain the same. States would need a huge amount of lead time and massive influx of money to make the changes Trump says he wants. In at least one state (I think Oregon) they would have to rebuild a network of polling places, buy millions of dollars worth of voting machines, and hire thousands of new works in a few months. It's just not possible. it's already well past the window when this could be done.

If they delay more than a month or two, it will be impossible to implement. We're talking about rebuilding election infrastructure from the ground up — not physically possible in the time we have now let alone if there's a delay in a Supreme Court decision. If he went to the SC next WEEK, it's probably not implementable until 2027 or 2028. The cost and complexity of doing this isn't possible this quickly.

States don't have the money, the personnel or the infrastructure to completely overhaul their elections systems in what would likely end up being 4-5 months max. I know I'm right. I've been working on elections issues for 20 years (and worked at my board of elections). You can't snap your fingers and instantly a new voting system falls into place. These are massive bureaucracies to build out and they are expensive. For Trump to declare this by executive order is another unfunded mandate that cannot possibly be executed.

It's not really possible to "tamper" with machines. For one, there are too many different systems and many, including mine, use paper ballots which can be challenged and recounted easily. But neither the scanners that count them nor electronic touchscreens in areas that still use them (they were found to be expensive and prone to breaking down) are networked. You would literally have to be physically present inside the board of elections to do anything, and BoEs are strict about who has access and how (To simply get a full ballot box and replace it or to carry a single ballot from one room to another we had to have both a Republican and a Democrat do it.)
Who "owns" the companies is irrelevant. Once the machines are purchased, the BoE owns them and as I said, they aren't connected to anything. Their functioning is tested at the BoE.
We've heard these — I hate to call them conspiracy theories but they are — since 2004, starting right here in Ohio, which is why I know so much about them. We heard (god I can't believe I'm still talking about this 22 years later) that Karl Rove was in a secret war room in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he was being fed the Ohio election results from the touchscreen machines and changing just enough for Bush to carry the state (If Bush had lost Ohio, John Kerry would've been president, and the vote was very close.) One huge problem,: virtually no counties in Ohio were using touchscreens in 2004 — our big touchscreen election was 2006 when Democrats won in a landslide. I think there were five mostly very small counties. Here on Ohio's largest, we still hd punchcards, which were counted by hand.

I'm certain that Democracy Docket and others are lined up to challenge the EO on voting, should it be signed, but it nevertheless makes me very uneasy. If he tries to screw with our elections from the federal level it will be the definition of a constitutional crisis, as our charter dictates state control of elections, and it should be a slam dunk for SCOTUS to block. No, it would be the same as voting AGAINST it. Because if the Supreme Court did not say OK, elections systems would remain the same. States would need a huge amount of lead time and massive influx of money to make the changes Trump says he wants. In at least one state (I think Oregon) they would have to rebuild a network of polling places, buy millions of dollars worth of voting machines, and hire thousands of new works in a few months. It's just not possible. it's already well past the window when this could be done.
Oregon yes, and predominately so in Washington state where I am. I’ve been mail-in voting for so many years, I cannot conceive how greater Seattle alone could manage any other way.
Just as he did with the tariffs, he will act on his EO and then it will go to the scotus who will not come to a decision for however long so a delay in the court will benefit him.
If they delay more than a month or two, it will be impossible to implement. We're talking about rebuilding election infrastructure from the ground up — not physically possible in the time we have now let alone if there's a delay in a Supreme Court decision. If he went to the SC next WEEK, it's probably not implementable until 2027 or 2028. The cost and complexity of doing this isn't possible this quickly.
If he tried to do this, it would be challenged in court. That would tie it up well past the time when anything could be implemented for this year. States don't have the money, the personnel or the infrastructure to completely overhaul their elections systems in what would likely end up being 4-5 months max. The SAVE Act itself is unconstitutional; an executive order would be even more so.

I know I'm right. I've been working on elections issues for 20 years (and worked at my board of elections). You can't snap your fingers and instantly a new voting system falls into place. These are massive bureaucracies to build out and they are expensive. For Trump to declare this by executive order is another unfunded mandate that cannot possibly be executed.

It's not really possible to "tamper" with machines. For one, there are too many different systems and many, including mine, use paper ballots which can be challenged and recounted easily. But neither the scanners that count them nor electronic touchscreens in areas that still use them (they were found to be expensive and prone to breaking down) are networked. You would literally have to be physically present inside the board of elections to do anything, and BoEs are strict about who has access and how (To simply get a full ballot box and replace it or to carry a single ballot from one room to another we had to have both a Republican and a Democrat do it.)
Who "owns" the companies is irrelevant. Once the machines are purchased, the BoE owns them and as I said, they aren't connected to anything. Their functioning is tested at the BoE.
We've heard these — I hate to call them conspiracy theories but they are — since 2004, starting right here in Ohio, which is why I know so much about them. We heard (god I can't believe I'm still talking about this 22 years later) that Karl Rove was in a secret war room in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he was being fed the Ohio election results from the touchscreen machines and changing just enough for Bush to carry the state (If Bush had lost Ohio, John Kerry would've been president, and the vote was very close.) One huge problem,: virtually no counties in Ohio were using touchscreens in 2004 — our big touchscreen election was 2006 when Democrats won in a landslide. I think there were five mostly very small counties. Here on Ohio's largest, we still hd punchcards, which were counted by hand.
