Aaron, do you have protection/security? Like, do we need to crowdfund for a bodyguard for you? I wish I was joking.

I think that is what he is asking for -- support from whomever can do so -- his is the only Substack of this type with no paywall. Kinzinger has dropped his paywall because he wants to facilitate our uniting and communicating. He does so on other social media sites as well. But even if you have trillions of followers if most do not pay even if they can pitch in something you are giving most of what you do away for free. Aaron is authentic and sincere and open about it that he does so because he believes in the free press, and it is his answer to the state of misinformation and the oligarch owned media today. Imagine being that young and this is all you ever knew. He said he tries to follow the style of news delivery of the famous ones we had so long ago. He mentioned one. I cannot recall but it was someone who was part of my life growing up. I'm in my seventies so that was a long time ago. I remember what the media was like at that time. So different and accountable. I recall the NY Times newspaper each morning on the inside of the first page had an apology for any errors that were then corrected whether it was the misspelling of a name or a fact or even a grammatical or spelling error. It demonstrated the standards they upheld. That was normal at the time. Standards.

Walter Cronkite!

RAISSA's avatar

I was eleven when Walter Cronkite broke down on television to announce President Kennedy had died. It was a time our news came over radio, television (black and white) or newspaper (black and white). Magazines were expensive and not many could afford them, but they were considered entertainment not news.

Our days were not spent consuming media. We lived our lives and were away from home most of the day work, school, playing, and read the paper on our commute or a book; then went home and the television was turned on to watch something specific. Children were called in at the end of the day for a bath, supper and bed. My bedtime was 730.

Over the next few decades around the late 70's, you could walk into a home where the television was on constantly; and after another period of time, in the 80's and 90's they were on constantly and in several rooms all at one time throughout a house.

When I was 12 color television became available. I knew no one who owned one. They were expensive. But one day my best friend and I deliberately went to Parkchester NY a few blocks from where we lived in the Bronx to stand outside a store and watch the color televisions thru a display window.

Memories of an old woman. They just keep coming like a flood as you get older, I find.

I’ve donated a couple of times using Venmo. It’s a great way to give with in your budget, and when it’s financially a good time for an individual to give.

Seriously though, can we voluntarily up our subscription cost? I'm not super familiar with the substack UI. When I subscribed, I thought $7 a month was too low for how much I want to support this man.

I know that for me what I did was an annual. So now when I sign in it gives option to sign up for Founding which I cannot afford. But whatever you have chosen there should be the option at top right offering the step up to next level. If you are donating monthly, then the next level will likely be annual. The other option Aaron offers is his Venmo account for one-time donations.

Everywhere else I subscribe to monthly, and some I subscribe FREE; and for the three J6 Heroes here with Substacks I elected Founding because I honor them so much. Also, they are still being threatened on top of which because of their public testimony and the notorious threats they have had trouble finding work. Can you imagine it. Our heroes unable to find work because they showed up and risked their lives to save others; secured our election; and then stood up and testified. The world is upside down.

But I know no matter what you have chosen if you read the text of the author's coverage or essay there is always a ribbon displayed as you scroll thru the reading offering the next level and that is the opportunity to donate more; but no one should unless they honestly can. And if things change anyone can unsubscribe easily as well.

On our home page there is an AI chat that will answer any questions navigating the site. I find that helpful.

The worst of humanity. Maybe that is something we as a "people" can push for together to root out these terror cells that are in it for the followers and provide a platform that attracts users to their websites who want to target and harass and threaten others using the social media platform which becomes their home.

These platforms bring out the worst who actually show up at your door. It's been going on for as long as there has been the internet, but it is now politicized and certain actors like Trump and his like have weaponized it. I think it is a major reason the Republicans so fear Trump. They fear for their lives and careers because of his army of trolls. There ought to be a law.
