BREAKING: Trump Blasts Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Minutes Before White House Meeting
In a stunning prelude to a high-stakes diplomatic meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing verbal attack on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, just minutes before Carney’s scheduled arrival at the White House. The confrontation underscores growing tensions between the two longtime allies at a pivotal moment in North American politics.

Trump, in a post made shortly before the bilateral talks, wrote:
“I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things? We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain. They, on the other hand, need EVERYTHING from us! The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence.”
The blistering message was released just before Carney’s motorcade was set to arrive, casting a shadow over what was expected to be a carefully choreographed visit between two G7 leaders.
Today’s meeting comes on the heels of a contentious period in U.S.-Canada relations. President Trump has recently floated the provocative idea of Canada joining the United States as the 51st state—an idea widely rejected by Canadians in the most recent federal election, which saw Carney reelected to a full term with a strong anti-Trump mandate.
Carney, a former central banker with deep international credibility, has positioned himself as a defender of Canadian sovereignty and multilateral cooperation. His administration has pushed back against Trump’s America-first trade rhetoric and unilateral policy shifts, while maintaining efforts to keep economic ties with the U.S. stable.
While details of the meeting’s agenda remain officially undisclosed, topics are expected to include trade, border security, climate cooperation, and Trump’s contentious 51st state proposal. However, after today’s comments, the tone may shift toward confrontation rather than collaboration.
Whether today's talks will ease tensions or further deepen the political rift remains to be seen.
Except...we kinda do need their lumber.
