We have breaking news right now. A federal judge raised concerns that the Trump administration deported a 2-year-old American citizen to Honduras without any meaningful legal process.
I am literally on a dinner date with my wife, but I wanted to make sure that you saw this news first. No matter where I am. No matter what I am doing. I will always bring the news to you, so please consider subscribing to support my work:
According to court filings and Politico reporting, the child, referred to as V.M.L., was deported along with her Honduran-born mother and sister. This happened even while a Trump-appointed judge was still reviewing the situation to determine whether ICE’s claim — that the mother wanted her daughter deported with her — was actually true.
“The Government contends that this is all okay because the mother wishes that the child be deported with her,” the judge wrote. “But the Court doesn’t know that.”
Lawyers for the family had filed an emergency petition just the day before, asking for the child’s immediate release from ICE custody. They had also arranged for a U.S. citizen, Trish Mack, to act as the child’s custodian at her father’s request.
Despite all that, the government went ahead with the deportation before the judge could issue a ruling.
This situation is alarming, not just because a two-year-old citizen was deported, but because it shows how easily due process can be bypassed when there’s no accountability. A hearing is now scheduled for May 16th to figure out how this happened, and whether the child was deported without due process.
More to come. Scary times indeed.
