Why the hell does congress collect their paychecks? That’s crazy.

Robot Bender's avatar

It's in the Constitution. Nothing to be done about it.

Melissa's avatar

I don't know, seems like the Constitution doesn't seem to be doing much of anything else to stop them.

Judy Steiner's avatar

They have violated the Constitution over and over and don't care. They own Congress and the Supreme Court, so they will not be held accountable. As part of the election process, there is a safe harbor clause. Sometime in December, the electors cast their votes. The idea of safe harbour is to keep people like Trump out of office. Symantics mean a lot. If an elector casts their vote for the opposing party, they are considered unfaithful and are subject to a $100 fine. In Trump 1.0, electors received death threats. Good grief. I will pay the fine should someone get a spine. It was worse last year.

I don't believe for a second that Trump is upset with Putin. Why should Putin care? It is smoke and mirrors. A plan is there somewhere.

That is what Trump means by private investors building the unnecessary ballroom with lawsuits.

Trump doesn't care about us. He wants the power to do whatever he wants, and the courts won't stand in his way. He told us he would be a dictator. People wrote it off, saying that's just the way Trump is. Yep. He certainly is.

I am petrified about the pep-talk tomorrow. Surely, he will expect the brass to kiss the ring.

DNC has to only agree that a clean CR is past, no GOP extras, but the DNC says NO! Americans can suffer! So NOT GOP to blame but the DNC. Why not ask Chuck Schumer to keep the government open?

Veronica Alleyne's avatar

thing is, that CR isn't clean at all or, don't you give a rip about republicans attempting to increase what people have to pay in insurance premiums, this is the only country where people go bankrupt just because the fell ill which usually isn't a choice nor is it a character flaw or moral failing & maybe get your head out of that hole in the ground you have it in give a rat's about someone else's suffering?

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

The CR only covers a 7-week period, so it expires before the "increased" premiums you refer to. That can then be negotiated during the next 7 weeks.

This administration doesn’t care about the Constitution.

Ann Unertl's avatar

They don’t care for anyone, except themselves. Narcissistic SOB’s

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

Agreed time for the DNC Senators to do the right thing!

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

This is on the DNC Senators! They can vote to keep the government funded.

DLH's avatar

No, actually it’s not. They/Dems, (and rightfully so for the American people who depends on it), want to have the Repubs halt on them cutting the billions of dollars from Medicaid and Medicare that’s in that “big beautiful bill”…and, separately, to extend the Affordable Care Act, (which the Repubs dubbed as “Obamacare”), subsidies—which is due to expire end of the year. The Repubs are refusing to do any of that for the American people. They want to keep the cuts AND let the Affordable Care Act’s Subsidies expire, which all of this hurts the low to mid income earners. They/Dems ALWAYS cave into the Repubs demands and get the funding (again, under the repubs terms) continued to avoid govt shutdown. However, this time, the Dems are not caving into the repubs wanting to just keep funding going WITHOUT wanting to take those EVIL terms out of that nasty a** bill…while the Dems are saying “no, take care of those important matters first before we sign off. So now the Repubs are spinning the blame game on the Dems to make it look like they (repubs) really care about the people when they never did…and them spinning their “see, the Dems don’t care about you” BS tactics are working. Case in point.

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

Cutting of medicare and medicaid to illegals is what needs to be done because they don’t belong here.

Judy Steiner's avatar

It is not in the Constitution. There is something that can be done. Congress would have to vote on it. We know that won't happen.

Maria K.'s avatar

That's a bit convoluted, isn't it? Congress would have to vote on whether or not Congress gets paid during a government shutdown? They would never vote against themselves. Stuff like that should be decided by a referendum.

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

DNC has to only agree that a clean CR is past, no GOP extras, but the DNC says NO! Americans can suffer! So NOT GOP to blame but the DNC. Why not ask Chuck Schumer to keep the government open?

Christine's avatar

Well, Trump and DoJ and SCOTUS don’t seem to mind shredding the constitution for other reasons, why not ignore this part of it too.

Also, since the whole issue revolves around healthcare, I think it’s only fitting that Congress should have their tax-payer funded healthcare eliminated.

I pay for mine, they should pay for theirs.

LilyFae's avatar

An amendment could be made but congress would never vote to hold themselves accountable to get the job done and receive the same consequences as those who have no teeth in the fight.

Robert Smith's avatar

My state, Missouri, lets us petition to put bills on the ballot. That's how we got rec cannabis. Could a state like mine use this process to block our congress members from getting paid during a shutdown?

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

No, not a bot, I simply need to keep reminding you that before one blames others, you need to look in the mirror. In this case the DNC asked for $1.5 trillion to fund illegals, send money to other nations through groups who have been exposed as poor managers of US Taxpayer dollars and then they decided that $400 billion was not needed for rural hospitals.

Marc Panaye's avatar

Hi friend Robot the Bender.... and what about rewriting the Constitution? I think the respected old lady needs some 21st century revamping.

I know I know.... repulsivecans will "oppose"... but on the other hand... who cares what some tRump suck-ups think right?

detectivemittens's avatar

I don’t think it’s fair to the rest of the government that Congress gets to collect a paycheck when the government is shut down. However, this is meant to protect the members of Congress who aren’t independently wealthy. Otherwise, the members of Congress who are independently wealthy will have an upper hand in negotiations in that they’ll always be able to threaten poorer members of Congress with shutting down the government and waiting it out until the poorer members of Congress compromise.

A Pilgrims Response's avatar

LilyFae's avatar

Democrats aren’t just obstructing for the sake of it — they’re demanding that critical ACA subsidies and Medicaid protections be extended in any funding bill. This week Republicans refused to even consider negotiations.

Veronica Alleyne's avatar

& they often leave for vacation with unfinished business something which is directly in the constitution, that congress shall not enact any laws which they exempt themselves from & this why character is not only important, it's everything but, you get what you vote for, don't you?

Gillette needs to be censored, preferrably removed from Congress. But, he's a Republican, so nothing will be done. Look at Mike Lee, he's still serving as a United States Senator from Utah until 2029!

DLee's avatar

I say shut it down | they are controlling all three branches so let them figure it out | let Johnson defund FEMA, childhood health care programs, and let trump continue to fire government employees | the voters just need to remember which party is responsible for this calamity and vote them out

S. A. Linden's avatar

Yes. Enough with the GOP blame game. Their job is to FIX IT and do it for their constituents, not the moguls. MAGAs will eventually figure it out, but I fear that there will be much coordinated violence from them first.

So every person who had an account suspended on the same grounds as DJT should file suit and collect. What’s good for one should be good for others. The same rules should apply to all. 🤨

Tara Batin's avatar

If there is a government shutdown no one in the government should be getting paid, most of all the members of Congress. Everyone else below them will not get paid, neither should they. I bet they would be more hellbent on finding a solution or compromise.

"Trump announced that Gaza will be placed under a temporary transitional governance led by a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee — but controversially declared that he himself would chair the committee."

This is abhorrent ⬆️ this monster needs to be stopped. The entire regime!!

Right of Revolution: The Declaration of Independence states that when a government becomes destructive of the people's rights and aims to reduce them under "absolute despotism," the people have the right and duty to throw off such a government and institute a new one.

MiddleChild's avatar

Well of course Trump is going to be chair of the committee. He needs to make sure that he and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are able to build their resort in Gaza.
