1) Hurricane Hilary Targets California
Hurricane Hilary is targeting Southern California, and Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for parts of Southern California for the first time in history. As of the latest update from the National Hurricane Center, Hilary is a strong category three hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph. Hilary is about one hundred miles off the coast of the Baja Peninsula, and Southern California should begin feeling Hilary’s affects as soon as tomorrow morning.
Although Hilary will weaken, life threatening flooding is expected in some areas, with parts of California expected to get more rain in 2 days than it does in 2 years. If you live in these areas be sure to keep an eye out for alerts from your local authorities and remain vigilant.
2) Russian War Crimes Continue
This morning, Russia launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian town of Chernihiv. The missile attack struck a theater in the town square, killing 7 Ukrainian citizens, including a 6 year old girl. Over 100 others were injured as a result of this strike. What made this strike even worse is today is a religious holiday for many in Ukraine. Hundreds of individuals gathered in the town square and were returning home from church when the missile strike occurred. Images like this one, with a man holding the body of his deceased wife, have become all too common in Ukraine.
3) Trump to Surrender Soon
Donald Trump and his co-defendants have until Friday, August 25, 2023, to surrender to Georgia authorities. According to latest reports, Trump is expected to surrender as early as Thursday, potentially sooner. The Fulton County Sheriff has stated that Trump and his co-defendants will have to surrender to the Rice City jail in Fulton County where they will be booked, have their mugshot taken, and be fingerprinted. Unlike in Miami, New York, and D.C., where Trump was allowed to surrender at the courthouse, here, Trump will be booked at a local jail just like any other defendant charged with a crime in Georgia.
4) FBI Searching for Proud Boy
The FBI is currently searching for a Proud Boy who has fled days before his sentencing for crimes committed at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Federal prosecutors were expected to seek a 14 year sentence for Worrell, who was convicted of multiple misdemeanor and federal criminal offenses after a bench trial in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. The FBI poster reads: “Christopher John Worrell is wanted for violating conditions of release pending sentencing on federal charges related to the violence at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021. A federal arrest warrant was issued for Worrell in the United States District Court, District of Columbia, Washington, D.C., on August 15, 2023.”
5) Maui Update
At least 114 individuals have died in Maui, Hawaii after wildfires caused the worst natural disaster in Hawaii’s history. As of this morning, more than 1,000 residents are still missing, with search and rescue efforts continuing. Meanwhile, damage estimates for the island have exceeded 6 billion dollars and are expected to grow as recovery efforts continue. As of yesterday evening, more than 60% of the area affected by the fires has been searched. Please say a prayer for those affected by the wildfires.
