As we speak, an economic blackout is occurring across the United States. Corporate media won’t cover it. So, I will.
Organizers have instructed Americans to avoid purchasing from big box retailers like Amazon, Target, and Walmart during the 24-hour period that begin this morning. The organization, The People’s Union USA, is calling this 24-hour spending pause an “economic blackout,” a term that has gained traction and sparked discussion on social media. In addition, the movement plans to organize weeklong boycotts targeting major companies such as Walmart and Amazon:
March 7 - March 14: Amazon boycott
March 21 - March 28: Nestle boycott
April 7 - April 14: Walmart boycott
April 18: Economic blackout #2
April 21 - April 28: General Mills boycott
Meanwhile, other activists, faith leaders, and consumers are launching their own boycotts in response to businesses rolling back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. These efforts also aim to push back against Donald Trump’s decision to eliminate all federal DEI initiatives.
I want to use Substack to conduct a brief poll. Are you planning to take part in the economic blackout? If so, what small businesses do you want to support or uplift during this time? Share your thoughts in the comments and help spotlight independent businesses that deserve more recognition. I will do my best to uplift as many small businesses as I can, today and everyday.
On a personal note, this evening, I am going to send out an email doing a Q&A with all of you! I am going to do one on live soon, but in the meantime, I want to answer all of your questions, and will spend the weekend answering any and all questions asked in the comment section. This will be a special perk for all paid subscribers. Consider becoming a paid subscriber today to get access to these perks and to support my independent work (and no, I never have and never will sell out to big money interests):
It’s my birthday. Enjoying the day at home with my dogs fighting back spending no money. SAVE DEMOCRACY. POWER to us, the people.
Aaron, if it weren’t for you, I might not have known about this economic blackout. Yes, I am participating, and will spread the word.
